Bloating or Gas

Burping and passing gas are very normal occurrences in day to day life. It’s estimated that the average person expels gas approximately 14 times per day. While normally it’s only embarrassing or uncomfortable, bloating and gas are common symptoms of several different GI illnesses.

Occasional gas after eating is completely normal. It is caused by allowing additional air to enter the GI tract through chewing gum, sucking on hard candy, or drinking carbonated beverages. Eating certain types of sugars and starches also causes a buildup of gas in the digestive system.

If your bloating or gas becomes chronic, it is important to see your doctor and determine the source of your issue. Bloating and gas are symptoms of a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions some, like Lactose intolerance, are easy to treat and cause no long term damage. Other conditions like Crohn’s disease can be quite serious and require lifelong medical care.

There is no reason to live with discomfort. Make an appointment with Dr. Islam today and discuss your symptoms and medical history. Depending on the range of symptoms, additional testing may be required.
