Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen or inflamed veins in the rectum. External hemorrhoids are located under the skin around the anus. Internal hemorrhoids develop in the lower rectum. Causes range from chronic constipation or diarrhea, straining during bowel movements, obesity, or even pregnancy.

Discomfort is usually the first noticeable symptom, especially during bowel movements or when sitting. Other symptoms include itching and bleeding. Hemorrhoids are not dangerous and usually resolve themselves in a few days.

At home treatments include a high-fiber diet, drinking plenty of water, over-the-counter medications such as stool softeners, and soaking in warm tub. In some cases, the hemorrhoids do not respond to over the counter treatment and begin to interfere with a patient’s quality of life. In those cases, additional treatments are available. Dr. Islam offers hemorrhoid banding which has a high success rate, so make an appointment today to explore your treatment options.
