Hemorrhoids are swollen or inflamed veins in the rectum. Causes range from straining during bowel movements to obesity or even pregnancy. Discomfort is usually the first noticable symptom, especially during bowel movements or when sitting. Other symptoms include itching and bleeding.
A high-fiber diet can be effective, along with over-the-counter medications such as stool softeners. In some cases, a medical procedure known as hemorrhoid banding may be needed to provide relief.
